Increased knowledge of CRC through word of mouth
My name is Frida, and I'm a third-year student at Western University of applied science (HVL) – studying to be a social educator. I had my exchange in Dar Es Salaam at the same school as Silje and six other students from HVL.
In the attempt to implement the UN human rights of children, we held presentations about CRC in four classes at the school. In preparation for the presentations, we made posters about CRC written in Swahili. To translate and formulate sentences, we got help from Open University of Tanzania.
Mr Jonas, one of the teachers at the school, helped us translate during all four presentations. As an advantage, he knows the children better then us. Therefore, he made adaptions during the presentations, so the children got the most out of it.
The first day, we had presentations in three classes. Every class got the question: "what are your rights as a child?". Most of the answers was about the child's duties at home. Such as cleaning, cooking and obey their parents. The second day, we asked the same questions to the last class. This time the children rattled off almost every right of the child. Most likely through word of mouth, the context of the presentation has spread during recess the day before.
This shows the importance of giving information and how quickly it spreads. We also want to thank Mr Jonas and Open University for the collaboration. Without them, we wouldn't have managed to convey the CRC.
